Luck may not always be on your side, but your car insurance will be!

Luck may not always be on your side, but your car insurance will be! When you are behind the wheel, you take on risks. Even an excellent driver will still be sharing streets and roads with other drivers. Car Insurance can provide the coverage you need to ensure your safety and protect your investment.

What are the main types of car insurance coverage in Florida?

In Florida, registering most vehicles requires keeping at least $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL). These are the minimum requirements. Depending on your vehicle, assets, financing, and the level of protection you want, other coverage may be worth adding.

Coverage What it means What it can protect
PIP Personal Injury Protection Helps pay certain medical expenses and lost income after an accident, regardless of who caused the crash, based on the coverage terms.
PDL Property Damage Liability Helps pay for damage you’re legally responsible for causing to someone else’s vehicle or property.
Bodily Injury Liability Liability for bodily injury Helps protect you financially when you’re legally responsible for injuring or causing the death of someone else in a covered accident.
UM/UIM Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist Can help if you’re injured by a driver who doesn’t carry enough liability insurance, or none at all.
Collision Collision coverage Helps pay to repair or replace your vehicle after a covered collision, subject to the policy’s deductible.
Comprehensive Comprehensive coverage Helps protect your vehicle against certain damage not caused by a collision, such as theft, vandalism, falling objects, and some covered weather events.

Does the minimum coverage mean you’re adequately protected?

Not necessarily. The minimum limits required by the state are just a starting point.

The right level of protection can depend on your vehicle’s value, your assets, how often you drive, the other drivers in your household, whether the car is financed or leased, and how much of an accident’s cost you could absorb.

That’s why, when comparing policies, it’s important to look at coverage, limits, deductibles, and exclusions — not just the premium.

How much does car insurance cost in Florida?

There’s no single price for car insurance in Florida. The premium is calculated based on the drivers’ profile, the vehicle, where it’s used and kept, driving history, and the coverage you choose. That’s why two people with similar cars can get different quotes — and the same person can get different quotes from different insurers.

What can affect the price of your insurance?

Factor How it can affect your rate
Drivers Age, driving experience, and driving history can factor into the review.
Accidents and violations A history of accidents or traffic violations can affect the risk the insurer assigns.
Vehicle Year, make, model, value, and other features can affect repair or replacement costs.
Location The area where the vehicle is kept can affect price based on local risk factors.
How the vehicle is used Personal use, commuting, and commercial use can carry different levels of risk.
Mileage How many miles you drive each year can be part of the calculation.
Coverage and limits The types of coverage and the limits you choose shape both your protection and your premium.
Deductibles The amount you take on before the insurer contributes to certain claims can also affect the cost.

Situations that may need extra attention

Some situations can change the requirements, the insurer’s underwriting decision, or the type of coverage you need.

This can happen, for example, if you:

  • recently arrived;
  • still use a foreign driver’s license;
  • have a financed or leased vehicle;
  • use your car for work;
  • drive for Uber, Lyft, or delivery services;
  • don’t yet have an insurance history here.

In these cases, it’s important to accurately report how the vehicle is used and understand the insurer’s rules before you enroll.
